The Marks lab in the Department of Systems Biology at Harvard Medical School is recruiting an Assistant Research Director to work closely with the PI Debora Marks in supporting exciting new projects that develop machine learning methods for applications in neurodegeneration, synthetic biology and drug design. The role will involve taking the lead in project management, partnering with Dr. Marks to recruit and mentor graduate students and postdoctoral fellows, manage a number of exciting collaborative projects, and assist with grant, report and research paper writing. Familiarity with development and maintenance of software and servers as well as coding experience is advantageous but not strictly required. The successful candidate will have a PhD and is likely to have research experience in a quantitative science. Position requires superb organizational communication and writing skills. We are looking for highly motivated recent graduates with strong background in statistics, mathematics or computer science who are looking to apply their skills to biology. We are looking for a talented and creative software engineer who is passionate about building user-friendly software to drive a project to make genomic tools accessible to the biomedical community focusing on genetic variation in disease and drug response.

You will have a demonstrated interest in computing in biology, preferably genomics, although the quality of your work is more important than the area you are in. The essential features for success are excitement about learning new domains, and the ability to write exceptional software.

You will be responsible for:

  • Leading the development in building and scaling up our open source genomic software to help transform genomic information into tools for the biomedical community

Qualifications (Required):

  • Enthusiasm for learning new domains and the ability to write well designed software.
  • Bachelors in Computer Science or related fields.
  • Have 3 to 5 years of professional software programming experience in a fast pace environment.
  • Have developed web-based applications or services
  • Demostratable experience in the following area:
    • Python, MATLAB, C
    • HTML5, CSS, Javascript
    • MySQL and noSQL databases
    • Linux, OS X

    Bonus Points if You:

    • Have experience with cloud computing
    • Have knowledge in statistics and linear algebra.

We are looking for a geeky graduate with some software experience to join our vibrant new computational biology lab at Harvard Medical School.

You will be play a central role in building and scaling up our open source genomic software to help transform genomic information into tools for the biomedical community.

Experience Required:

  • Enthusiasm for learning new domains and the ability to write well designed software.
  • Bachelors in Computer Science or related fields.
  • 1+ years of experience in web technologies
  • Great working knowledge of Javascript, HTML and CSS
  • Experience working with MySQL and noSQL databases.
  • Strong knowledge of Python.
  • Familiar with Django or Flask
  • Enjoy working in a team environment.

Bonus Points if You:

  • Have 2+ years of professional software programming experience
  • Have experience with cluster or cloud computing
  • Have knowledge in statistics and linear algebra.
